Lacrosse Coach & Assistance Administrator
Former college player at M.I.T.
Coach John is originally from Dallas, Texas. He moved to Southern California in 1962 following graduation from M.I. T. with a BS in Industrial Management. His collegiate lacrosse tenure spanned a 4-year period during which M.I.T. was twice named National Co-Champion of NCAA Class C (now called Division III).
After a diverse career in aerospace, mass transit and electronics, John retired at the end of 2011 as the Chief Financial Officer of a public company. His post-retirement exercise regimen around the Bluffs area of Newport Beach, where he has lived since 1971 with his wife, Margo, produced a chance encounter with the tryouts for the CdM High School Girls’ Lacrosse team in February 2012 at the Eastbluff Elementary School field. This encounter set in motion a sequence of events that eventually led to him becoming recognized as the team’s “#1 Fan” in 2012, a team statistician in 2013, and ultimately, a district-certified assistant coach from 2014 on. As such, John provides coaching support for all three teams as well as well as handling a variety of administrative and logistics tasks for the overall program.
John had extensive youth coaching experience prior to his affiliation with CdM Girls Lacrosse. When his son and daughter were attending Eastbluff Elementary and CdM High, youth lacrosse was not available in this area, and they participated extensively in soccer. Over a 13-year period, John supported both his children’s participation and that of others in the local American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) program, initially as a coach and referee and then as the first Regional Commissioner of AYSO Region 57 when it split off to operate separately from West Newport. He received Coaching Certifications from both AYSO and the United States Soccer Federation and eventually became the Section Head Coach, in which role he organized clinics to certify other AYSO coaches.
Lacrosse & Goalie Coach
This will be Coach Tom’s 40th year as a coach and he is thrilled to be kicking that off with his first season with the varsity program at CdM. He is currently a member of the national training staff for US Lacrosse, leading Coaching Education Program certification clinics for women’s lacrosse coaches nationwide. He is also a certified Positive Coaching Alliance trainer for US Lacrosse.
Prior to CdM, Tom spent five season as the Head Coach at Beckman High School (where he led them to 5 Pacific Coast League titles, one of those shared with CdM!) and three seasons helping to rejuvenate the girls program at Sage Hill. Early on, he helped start girls lacrosse at Pioneer Middle School, and the OC programs for both Team OC and OC Starz.
Coach Tom grew up near Niagara Falls playing hockey and box lacrosse prior to attending SUNY Buffalo and Syracuse. His coaching career began in Niagara Falls at age 19, coaching youth hockey with his Father. He’s coached hockey, soccer or lacrosse every year since. In addition to coaching, Tom has been a HS and NCAA ice hockey official, soccer official, and has officiated many seasons of women’s lacrosse at the MS, HS and college club levels.
By day, Coach Tom is an executive with one of the nation’s largest private real estate development firms, leading major corporate acquisitions and construction projects. He loves sneaking out early during lacrosse season to coach. He and his wife Barbara reside on the Tustin Ranch golf course and have two grown children, Aaron and Abbey, who have each excelled in lacrosse at the HS and NCAA levels.
Coach Kelsey is from Severna Park, MD, where she attended Severn School. At Severn, she was a 2x Defensive Player of the Year (2007 & 2008), a 2x IAAM A-league All-Star (2007 & 2008), selected to the All-Galaxy First team in 2007 & Second Team in 2008. As a senior, she was named first-team All-Met performer. Kelsey then attended the University of Denver her Freshman year, and then transferred to the Pennsylvania State University to finish out her lacrosse career. While at Penn State, the team went to the NCAA semi-finals, the first time for the program in 20 years. Kelsey has just relocated to the OC area from New York City, and lives in Newport Coast with her fiancé, Mac and their two dogs, Mason & Gatsby.
